Abbeville is a historic, quaint town located in northwestern South Carolina, about 85 miles west of Columbia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,237. Abbeville was settled by French Hugenots in 1764 and named for the French town of the same name. The city has the distinction of being the location of the tallest building in South Carolina - the Prysmian Copper Wire Tower, built in 2009 at 373 feet and 30 floors. It's also known for being both the birthplace and death of the Confederacy. In 1860, a meeting was held at Abbeville, at a site now called Secession Hill, to launch South Carolinas secession from the Union. At the end of the Civil War, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, fled Richmond, Virginia and stopped for a night in Abbeville at the home of his friend, Armistead Burt. It was there, on May 2, 1865, that Davis officially announced the dissolution of the Confederate government. For history buffs, there is a self-guided tour of the town that includes the old business district around the town square, several early churches and some of the residential area. Downtown Abbeville also offers shopping and dining and is home to a restored hotel and opera house. The charming town square is also the site of the annual Spring Festival on the Square. This event features art and flower shows, an antique car show, craft and food vendors, amusement rides, evening street dances and much more.

Abbeville Weather & Climate

Northwest South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate. Areas further north in what is known as the "Upstate" area has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
