Edisto-Beach is located south of Charleston on the southern tip of Edisto Island. This small town of approximately 700 residents is part of Colleton County, while the rest of the island is part of Charleston County. Edisto Beach's low-key, relaxed atmosphere remains one of the last truly unspoiled beach areas on the East Coast. To reach Edisto Beach, drive approximately 45 miles south of Charleston to where coastal Highway U.S. 17 and South Carolina Highway 174 form a junction. From there it is about a 20-minute drive on Highway 174. The scenic drive takes you through peaceful farmlands and moss-covered oak archways, past old-fashioned country churches and antebellum plantations. The McKinley Washington Jr. Bridge at the Intracoastal Waterway marks the gateway to Edisto Island. The island is home to 1,255-acre Edisto Beach State Park, which includes a dense maritime forest and large salt marsh. The park offers day-use beach areas, camping, and a four-mile hiking trail that takes you through the maritime forest. An Interpretive Center with interactive displays is also inside the park. As you enter the town of Edisto Beach, the entrance to the State Park is on the left. Other attractions on Edisto Island include an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Tom Jackson, and the Edisto Island Serpentarium, the first true serpentarium in South Carolina where you can view displays of reptiles from the region, as well as from around the world.

Edisto Beach Weather & Climate

Southeast South Carolina, along the coast , has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Winters are short and very mild, with less than an inch of measurable snowfall per year. Occasional rain is likely in winter, with freezing rain a possibility, but more likely inland. Precipitation is abundant all year long, with thunderstorms in spring and summer. The South Carolina coast is prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, with the annual hurricane season running June through November. The most notable hurricane was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them plenty of time to prepare.
