Georgetown is located just off Highway 17 between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. As South Carolina's third oldest city, few other places contain more history and Southern charm than Georgetown. The city was founded in 1729 and it became an official port of entry in 1732 - however it is believed to be the probable site of the first European settlement in North America as early as 1526. The Georgetown of today has a population of about 9,000 residents and is known for its' warm hospitality, natural beauty and historical significance and superb recreational opportunities. Commercial fishing and tourism are the major industries in Georgetown. However, you won't see high-rises or sprawling shopping malls in Georgetown - in fact, buildings over three stories high are not even allowed in town. Instead, you'll find lovely oak-lined avenues and a charming waterfront Harborwalk lined with art galleries, antique shops, quaint specialty stores and restaurants. The city contains three museums, more than 50 antebellum homes, buildings and historic sites, five restored rice plantations and Brookgreen Gardens, which contains the world's largest collection of outdoor sculpture. Guided or self-guided historical tours are available or you can see Georgetown by boat. A variety of tours take visitors in and around Winyah Bay and the surrounding rivers, past plantation mansions and abandoned rice fields. For outdoor recreation, Georgetown offers 35 miles of beaches and five rivers, 13 marinas and boat landings, five public parks and 17 golf courses.

Georgetown Weather & Climate

Central South Carolina, along the coast, , has a humid subtropical climate. Precipitation is abundant throughout the year, but summer is the wettest season. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare, with less than an inch accumulation. On average, it's more common for most areas along the coast to receive no measurable snowfall. The South Carolina coast is prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, with the annual hurricane season running June through November. Tornadoes are also a threat to the state. Summers can be very hot and humid, with daytime highs 90 degrees or above and lows in the 70s.
