James-Island
is a triangular-shaped barrier island off the coast of South Carolina that is part of Charleston County. There is a small town on the island, also called James Island. For United States Census Bureau purposes, the island is included in the Charleston, North Carolina urbanized area. James Island is surrounded by Wappoo Creek and Charleston Harbor on the north, Morris Island and Folly Beach on the east, and Stono River and Johns Island on the west. The island is referred to as "Jim Isle" by locals and is known for its' fishing, shrimping and farming. It's filled with creeks and many ancient live oaks, and is home to the annual Holiday Festival of Lights. One of the island's oldest neighborhoods on the island, called Riverland Terrace, was developed in the 1940s and offers a public boat landing, restaurants, antique shops and a playground. For history buffs, James Island is known as the site where the American Civil War began on April 12, 1861. Confederate forces at Fort Johnson fired on Union-occupied Fort Sumter. Both forts were located on James Island's north shore. From then on, most of the fighting in the Charleston area took place on James Island and Morris Island.

Mid-point, along the coastline of South Carolina, has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. The area receives a significant amount of rainfall year-round. Summer is the wettest season with almost half the annual precipitation occurring during this time. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare. Hurricanes are a major threat to this area during the summer and early fall. The most notable one in recent history was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Plenty of warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them time to prepare.
