Walterboro
is small town located in Colleton County in southern South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the population was 5,153. The city is known for its' many fine examples of 19th century architectural styles. Three structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dating to 1784, the town of Walterboro began as a summer retreat for the owners of the nearby large rice plantations. The retreat grew into a town and was incorporated in 1826. Walterboro is a picturesque town with centuries-old, moss-draped oak trees lining the streets, beautiful gardens of azaleas and camellias, and homes with broad front porches. Walterboro hosts an annual Rice Festival each April, which celebrates the county's rice crop. The festival includes a parade, cooking contest, run/walk and a Rice Festival pageant. Other attractions include the South Carolina Artisan Center and the Slave Relic Museum, which houses many articles made and used by African Americans during the period that they were enslaved (1750s-1800s.) The Great Swamp Sanctuary is 800 acres with walking and biking trails, boardwalks, canoeing and kayaking opportunities and observation areas. It's free to enter and is open from dawn to dusk everyday.

Southern South Carolina receives about 64 days of thunderstorm activity per year, mostly in the summer. The area is also prone to tropical cyclones. Hurricane season runs from June through November. The peak hurricane season in the southeast part of the state is early August to early October. Mild weather almost year-round makes southern South Carolina a popular place for outdoor activities.
